- Golden Miller, who won every race from 1932-36, dominated the race. Eight years later, the Gold Cup was cancelled twice during World War II. After the war, there was a new champion, Cottage Rake. The horse won the Gold Cup for three consecutive years from 1948-50, which led to the increasing popularity of the race.
- Kauto Star (19 March 2000 – 29 June 2015) was a French-bred National Hunt champion racehorse trained by Paul Nicholls in Somerset and owned by Clive Smith. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, in 2007 and 2009, becoming the first horse to regain the cup after losing it in 2008 by seven lengths behind Denman.
Champion Hurdle preview: Honeysuckle to remain unbeaten
Best Mate, Cottage Rake, and Arkle all hit hat-tricks, defying the Gold Cup odds in the process. Golden Miller won the race five times consecutively in the 1930s.
Timeform’s John Ingles previews next Tuesday’s Champion Hurdle in which last year's winner Epatante faces a strong challenger for her crown.
Epatantebeat a larger field than she'll face this year when readily justifying strong support in last year’s Champion Hurdle, but with no genuinely high-class hurdlers on the scene, it was no more than an ordinary renewal of the two-mile hurdling championship. That said, it took Epatante’s record over hurdles to five wins from six starts, and when she impressed with the style of her winning reappearance in the ‘Fighting Fifth’ Hurdle she became a very short price to make a successful defence of her Champion Hurdle crown.
She travels with so much ease and powers up the hill - what a superb performance all-round from Epatante. 👏👏

Epatante jumped superbly at Newcastle, and when her new jockey Aidan Coleman let out some rein after the final flight, she made the Elite Hurdle winner Sceau Royal look very one-paced. The ‘Fighting Fifth’ was a weak contest, however, and the Christmas Hurdle, which Epatante had won the year before, looked hers for the taking too. But in a tactical contest, she was unable to peg back Silver Streakwho has a good record at Kempton and had departed early on in the ‘Fighting Fifth’ through no fault of his own. Third in the 2019 Champion Hurdle, Silver Streak’s career-best effort at Kempton coincided with an off-day for Epatante who, it should be remembered, beat him at both Kempton and Cheltenham last season, and must have good prospects of reversing places from their last meeting.
